Wolverhampton Wanderers rose to 6th with a 1-0 win at Elland Road in the Monday night football and now they return to Molineux where they will host 13th-placed Newcastle United who were beaten 4-1 by Manchester United on Saturday night despite being level until the 86th minute.
It looked like a slow start for Wolves in September but back-to-back 1-0 wins either side of the international break means they have started with three wins from five in the top flight for the first time since 1979. However, a common trend has started to occur in Wolves games with the Midlands club tending to start slow in their matches. The club drew a league high 14 games last season but just one of their 14 games behind closed doors has finished level. Nuno Espirito’s side have been winning at half-time in just eight of their matches since the beginning of last season and managed to win all eight but they have failed to score in the first half of 31 of their Premier League games in that time-frame.
Newcastle, under Steve Bruce, have started with two wins, one draw and two defeats but stretching back to the start of the last campaign they have been losing in just 13 of their 43 Premier League matches. The Magpies have been drawing at the interval in 23 of those games and but have went on to win just seven of those contests. Newcastle have also drawn each of their two games at Molineux, 1-1, since Wolves’ promotion in 2018.
Wolves have become notorious for starting games slow and playing their way into a contest. Perhaps it's a purposeful tactic deployed by Nuno to help draw their opponents in and hit them on the break with their explosive pace. Either way I feel we are going to see another slow start and I'm predicting that we will see more goals in this one after the half-time break.
