Wolverhampton Wanderers will look to make it a third successive win over Manchester City, who themselves are chasing the record of becoming the first team to win an opening match for the tenth consecutive Premier League season. This match to be played at the Molineux Stadium will be the first of the season for City, while the Wolves will be playing their second match after a 2-0 win over Sheffield United in the opener.
Wolves finished seventh in the standings last year, pipped to the top-six by Tottenham Hotspur only on the final matchday. The 2-0 loss to Chelsea on the final matchday was Wolves’ only reverse in their last five Premier League matches – winning three and drawing one. Wolves were one of just two teams to complete a Premier League double over Manchester City last season. They now have a chance to win three league matches against them in a row, for the first time since October 1961. Playing at the Molineux suits the Wolves, as they have avoided defeat in six of their last seven Premier League home games – winning four and drawing two. Each of those matches saw them keep a clean sheet, although repeating that could be tough.
City have lost four of their last seven Premier League away matches at Wolves including the last two in a row. Pep Guardiola has never lost three consecutive league games against a single opponent in his entire managerial career. City will look to rest their hopes on their impressive Matchday 1 record – the visitors haven’t lost their opening match in any of their last 11 Premier League seasons – winning ten and drawing one. That includes winning the last nine in a row and a win in this match will make City the first Premier League side to win ten consecutive season openers. Whilst they have won their last five Premier League matches in a row, they could win only their last two away matches losing the previous three.
Wolverhampton Wanderers were the thorn in Manchester City’s flesh last season, doing a league double over Pep Guardiola’s side. Having relinquished their title to Liverpool without a big fight last year, City would be desperate to hit the ground running quickly this campaign. Expect the visitors to put their ‘Molineux troubles’ to bed and pick up a win here.
