Group B winners Malmo will travel to Germany to face the runners-up from Group I, Wolfsburg for the first leg of their Round of 32 tie having played just one competitive game since December. Wolfsburg come into this game unbeaten in three games and they enjoyed a 3-2 win away at Hoffenheim at the weekend to move to 9th in the Bundesliga standings. They still have a lot of work to do though however, if they are to qualify for this competition next season. They are currently five points behind Schalke who occupy the final qualification spot. Wout Weghorst bagged a hat-trick at the weekend and he will be aiming to be on target again as Wolfsburg are in search of their first home win of 2020. They have had two games at home this year but have drawn one and lost one. At home in the Bundesliga they have won just three of their 11 home matches but in the Europa League group stage they won two and lost the other to eventual group winners Gent.
As for Malmo their domestic league finished in November and they placed 2nd which secures their status for this competition for next season. They topped Group B with 11 points from six games after losing their opening game they went five unbeaten to finish top. Gent won one, drew one and lost one of their away group games and with little competitive football in recent weeks this could be a step too far for them. Their last away game was at Copenhagen which they managed to win but they haven’t played a competitive game on the road since that win back in mid-December.
Malmo have been free firing in recent away games but they were friendlies so it’s hard to take much from those games. Wolfsburg have been showing well of late and although they lack defensively, they make up for it at the other end. I’m going to tip a home win here.
