The progress or otherwise of Wales (second, 14 points) and Uruguay (fifth, four points) from Pool ‘D’ of the Rugby World Cup is fixed, but take nothing away from their encounter which is the last group game.
Wales are already through to the quarter-final with three wins out of three so far. They started with a 43-14 win over Georgia and then followed it up with a battling 29-25 win over Australia. That victory more or less settled their position in the top-two, which was confirmed when Wales defeated Fiji 29-17 in their previous round fixture. With Australia having finished their group engagements, Wales need to avoid defeat against Uruguay to finish first in the group and a potential quarter-final game against France. However, the Welsh were not at their best - in at least two matches so far. While the win over Australia was a close one, even Fiji gave them a scare in the previous game. Key players like Dan Biggar, Josh Adams and Jonathan Davies are all struggling with injuries and out of the contest.
How much that would help Uruguay is anyone’s guess. The South Americans have struggled to show their worth in the tournament after starting on a high. The 30-27 win over Fiji was an example of their hard work and dedication, but Uruguay couldn’t improve from there on. They lost 33-7 to Georgia and then fell to a 45-10 loss to Australia. There is nothing to lose for Uruguay, but if they can bring their plucky game to this fixture, a revamped Wales could be tested to the hilt.
Wales have been in good form throughout the tournament, and have picked up wins even when pushed to the limit. The wins over Australia and Fiji showed that Wales are here for the scrap and can pick up another win.
