Wales and France meet in the third quarter-final of the Rugby World Cup, with memories of France’s surprise win over Wales in the 2011 semi-final still fresh in the minds for both the nations.
Wales topped Pool ‘D’ with four straight wins, but have not been completely inspiring in the tournament. Their best performance, however, has come in their most important match of the pool. The Welsh defeated Australia 29-25 on the basis of an excellent first-half performance and eventually that proved to be the difference in the final standings. However, Wales will have ‘revenge’ on their mind considering they have lost 9-8 against France in the 2011 World Cup edition. That said, the Welsh did improve after that result and have managed seven wins in their last eight matches against France. In addition, Dan Biggar will be available for Wales for this match which should improve their chances.
France had won their first three Pool games before their final game against England was cancelled because of a typhoon. That has certainly robbed the French of game practice against a top team, considering France have only played Argentina (ranked 11th in the world), USA and Tonga in this tournament. However, that cancelled game meant France have an extra week of rest and will look to make it count. Furthermore, France have won six of their eight quarter-finals and can push Wales to the limit.
Wales are in a better frame of mind and fitness, considering the likes of Dan Biggar, Jonathan Davies, and George North will be back in contention. As for France, they are sweating over the fitness of Damian Penaud and Antoine Dupont. It is Wales who have better form coming into this fixture and should win the match to move into the semis.
