Wales (second, nine points) can secure a place in the Rugby World Cup quarter-final with a win in their next Pool ‘D’ match against Fiji (third, seven points).
The Welsh however will be aware of the pitfalls – the Fijians dumped them out of the 2007 World Cup with a shocking 38-34 win. Although that remains the only time in 13 matches that Wales lost to Fiji, they know that things can’t be taken for granted. Wales come into this fixture on the back of two consistent games. The 43-14 win over Georgia started their tournament on a high, which got better with a 29-25 win over Australia. While the victory over Georgia was on expected lines, the narrow win over the Wallabies kept the Welsh on their toes. They had to wither a second-half storm from Australia to make it two wins in a row. For this match, Wales have made a couple of back-row changes with James Davies and Ross Moriarty coming into the side in place of Justin Tipuric (rested) and Aaron Wainwright.
Fiji coach John Mckee has already said his side would use 2007 result as a reference point, but knows that his task is cut out. They have had a mixed tournament so far – stretching Australia in the first game with a 39-21 loss and then shocked by Uruguay in a 30-27 setback. Although they came back into form with a 45-10 thumping of Georgia, Fiji are still looking for a win that cements their third place. It would be vital for the side to do that and gain an automatic qualification for the next World Cup. Fiji will come into this game with just one change, as Viliame Mata comes into the side in place of Peceli Yato.
Wales have once in the past under-estimated Fiji and got duly dumped out of World Cup. This side is different from that, though, and the circumstances are also different – with Wales in a much-better frame of momentum for this fixture. Expect the side to roll past Fiji with an easy win.
