It's been a ride and a half for Denmark at Euro 2020. Just how proud must Christian Eriksen be of his teammates who take on Wales in the last sixteen in Amsterdam. The emotions experienced in their opening match against Finland will probably never be forgotten. They went on to lose that game and reaching the knockout stages didn't look likely. Not that was their main concern, that was the health of Eriksen and the mental health of the rest of their players and officials. Their second group match saw them beaten 2-1 by eventual group winners Belgium, despite taking an early lead. Bottom of the group after two games, Denmark turned it all around with a 4-1 win over Russia, seeing them finish second in their group and in the knockout stages of the Euros for the first time since 2004. The win over Russia was their fifth victory in their last eight matches with at least two goals in each of those wins. Just imagine what the win will do to their confidence.
Wales reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016 and haven't done a great deal since then. They made it into the knockout stages of this event by finishing second in Group A behind Italy. Only Turkey were beaten by them in that group, something everyone in that group managed to do. The other two games saw them come from behind to draw with Switzerland and lose to a second-string Italy side 1-0. Yet they've still been celebrating as if they'd won the tournament. They've managed to get this far even though Gareth Bale has been missing clear chances and a penalty. The win over Turkey is the only victory they have managed in their last five games. These two sides met in the group stages of the 2018/19 Nations League and Denmark won both of them. Another form comparison is in recent games against England. Denmark drew at home and then won at Wembley in 2020, Wales played England at Wembley last October and lost 3-0. Back the Danes to win this match and have a likely last eight match against the Netherlands.
