Bottom of the table Volendam clash with the wounded beast of Ajax, in what should be a firecracker of a game. The hosts are in truly dismal form. They are bottom of the table with just five points, one win and twenty-three goals conceded in eight games. They are on a five-game winless run at the moment, during which they have let in a staggering sixteen goals. With thrashing after thrashing, it is hard to envisage any sort of scenario where the home team manage to get a point from the Ajax team, even accounting for the visitors’ current poor form. In fact, Volendam have only beaten Ajax once at the Kras Stadion in normal time in their previous twelve encounter, albeit the most recent one being back in 2008.Â
Ajax are surely in crisis at the moment. Their 6-1 humbling by Napoli at the Amsterdam Arena was their heaviest defeat since 1964 and surely a dark moment in the glorious history of the club. It was not however just a blip. It was the fourth consecutive winless game for Ajax, who have been harshly thrust back into reality after a flawless honeymoon period with Alfred Schreuder at the helm. They are still within their targets however, being just a point shy off leaders AZ Alkmaar in second place and having won three of their four league away games this season. In fact, since 2021, they have only lost three league away games, with two being against heavyweights AZ and PSV.
