In their third match of the Copa America 2021, Venezuela will be up against Ecuador with the two nations fighting for one of the four slots to the quarters from Group B. Ecuador will be playing their second game and have no point after their loss to Colombia while Venezuela are coming from a 0-0 draw with Colombia. While Venezuela’s result against Colombia will be considered positive after an earlier 3-0 loss to Brazil, they are still struggling on the attacking front. Francisco Aristeguieta and Cristian Casseres have failed to inspire the team in the absence of Salomon Rondon, after starting in both games. Venezuela have now failed to score in three straight games and go here with just one goal in four matches. They are winless in the last four matches but holding this Colombia side with some of the best attacking talent isn’t a mean feat, especially after also having shut out Uruguay earlier.
Ecuador will have the advantage of resting an extra day but as they go to their second match of the competition, will be looking to address the mistakes in the 1-0 opening loss to Colombia. That result left Ecuador on three straight losses and five in nine. In their last 10 matches, they have one clean sheet and that came way back in 2019, an indicator that defence isn’t their strongest area. It doesn’t help their ambitions that in the last three matches alone, Ecuador have conceded five goals, and scored just one. While they have a good run over Venezuela, unbeaten in the last six meetings, their more recent performances haven’t been very encouraging.
These two nations haven’t won a lot of their recent matches. Venezuela aren’t very strong in attack but have been improving defensively, while Ecuador have been weak in defence. The two nations are set to give a lot in this game, sensing that for either side it is a winnable clash and a draw looks very likely.
