In a match that will decide the bottom places of Pool C of the Rugby World Cup, United States of America (zero points) will take on Tonga (one point).
USA started the tournament with a disappointing 45-7 loss to England. Not that the result was unexpected, but the margin of loss was damning for the side. USA then went on to lose 33-9 to France, another poor effort from the Americans. However, they recovered well and gave a tough fight to Argentina in a 47-17 loss. That they had three tries in the contest was a sign of their improvement. Regardless, the three losses showed that the Americans have a lot to improve if they are looking to pick their first win of the tournament. Forget the win, they couldn’t even pick up a bonus point in their matches so far. That casts a shadow on their aspirations of bowing out on a high.
Tonga, on the other hand, have a bonus point from their 23-21 narrow loss to France. It was their slow start that hampered their chances of upsetting the French. In their three matches so far, Tonga trailed at the break with scores of 18-3, 28-7, and 17-7. However, the Tongans have shown improvement from the first match. They lost 35-3 to England and then 28-12 to Argentina. With the confidence from France game expected to lead their charge, Tonga could be looking to finish on a high.
Both these teams – United States of America and Tonga will be looking to avoid the wooden spoon in the pool having lost all their matches so far. Tonga came close to upsetting France and will hope to repeat the same performance. As for USA, they have just a four-day turnaround for the game and could be found out. Back Tonga to win the game.
