Schalke will make the trip to the German capital to face Union without suspended midfielder Weston Mckennie. The Royal Blues are now in 10th position after being handed their fourth straight defeat by Werder Bremen last weekend. As for Union they may well have been the surprise package this season taking everything in their stride during their maiden top-flight campaign but they still have work to do. Die Eisernen are 14th with five games to go, four points ahead of Dusseldorf who occupy the relegation play-off place.
The hosts, led by Urs Ficher, have struggled since the season resumed and the break appears to have broken their momentum. A 4-1 loss to Borussia Monchengladbach last week was their second in a row and they remain winless since the restart. The home side are without a win in seven and have lost five games during that run. At home, however, they have earned two thirds of their 31-point tally (20) winning six of their 14 fixtures. What will worry Ficher is that his side have conceded 11 times in their four games back which is joint with Koln for the most since the season resumed.
As for the visitors they have been in freefall recently and really it all turned south after Christmas. Schalke were third when they won the reverse fixture back in November but after four consecutive defeats they are now 10th and without a win in the Bundesliga since January and their first game following the winter break. David Wagner has confused many with his selections and now he is without two of his most influential players. Weston McKennie is suspended for this game and he joins the injured Suat Serdar on the sidelines.
I’m not expecting too many fireworks in this game between the league’s two most out of form sides coming into this fixture. Schalke have really struggled since the restart and with further absences I can’t see them improving. As for Union they too can’t seem to find their feet and I’m predicting this game will produce under 2.5 goals.
