Turkey and Albania meet this Friday evening at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul as the UEFA Euro Championship group stage qualifiers continue into the return leg. Goals by Burak Yilmaz and Calhanoglu gave Turkey a 2-0 victory over Albania in the opening leg of the tournament last March, after which they wen on to win all but one of their next five matches. Were it not for a 2-1 loss to Iceland, Turkey would have had a 100 per cent winning record in the Group H games.
Still, Şenol Güneş team maintain an impressive record that has seen them score 14 goals while conceding just twice since the group competitions began. The Crescent Stars only gave away goals in the loss to Iceland. At present, Turkey, France, and Iceland are the three teams leading the contention for the two tickets to the next round, making wins in all of heir remaining matches critical.
Visitors Albania have won three times and lost in three games to rank fourth in the group. The Albanians most recently felled Iceland, the only team that has beaten Turkey, hading them a 4-2 beating as the return leg took off. Kastriot Dermaku, Elseid Hysaj, Odishe Roshi and Sokok Cikalleshi were the goal scorers in the game. But the Eagles might have a tough time in turkey as they have only won just three times in 12 away games. It has also been difficult for Edoardo Reja's team to maintain clean sheets and have only failed to concede in two of their last 12 away games. Similarly, Albania have historically struggled against Turkey to whom they have lost three times in four games.
While Albania may appear like giant slayers after their victory over Iceland, they are weak on the road and will be upt against a tough Turkish side, which will almost certainly carry the day. But we see more value in backing a win for the home side at both half time and at the end of the match.
