Stuttgart returned to winning ways last weekend in the Bundesliga with a 4-1 win over Augsburg and traded places with their opponents in doing so. Die Schwaben are now 10th in the standings as they welcome a Borussia Monchengladbach side who are fresh off beating the current champions. Gladbach fought from two goals down to defeat Bayern Munich 3-2 in their last game and Marco Rose’s side remain 7th with 24 points just one point off European football.
Stuttgart’s season has ebbed and flowed and I suppose that’s what you would expect from a side sitting firmly in mid-table with a record of five wins, six draws and four defeats. The home side had gone three games without a win in the Bundesliga prior to their 4-1 victory on the road last weekend. However, Stuttgart are still looking for their first league win at the Mercedes-Benz Arena this season. A 1-0 victory against Freiburg in the DFB Pokal, days before Christmas, remains their only home win in nine matches in all and eight games this season.
Stuttgart have won each of the last two meetings between these sides when hosting but they will be encountering a buoyant Borussia on this occasion after their scalp last weekend. Gladbach recorded back-to-back league wins for just the second time this season and their victory over Bayern could kick-start their push for European football in the second half of the campaign. Borussia have only lost three of their 15 Bundesliga games but six draws see them off the pace in terms of qualifying for major European competition. On the road they are three games unbeaten with a 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld in their last away game following high-scoring draws with Frankfurt (3-3) and Freiburg (2-2).
