The match

With the preliminary and second round games over, we are into the business end of action in the FIBA World Basketball tournament. And in the second quarterfinal of the tournament, we have a surprise team Poland taking on Spain. The Spaniards are the 2006 Champions and are looking to make their first semi-final after missing out on their last two editions. Spain have played well so far, winning each of their five matches. That included wins over Puerto Rico, Tunisia and Iran in the first round and following up with wins over Italy and Serbia in the second round. With just over 63 points conceded per game in the tournament, Spain have been on top of their defensive play. The 25th-ranked Poland are the surprise package at this stage of the tournament. They needed overtime to defeat China by three points in the first round and even their win over Russia was a narrower one in the second round. However, as the loss by 26 point to Argentina indicated, Poland are still miles away from challenging the top sides. Especially with Spain on top of their defensive game, it is hard to see how they can cope up with that.

Key Statistics

  • Spain are unbeaten in the tournament.
  • Spain won the tournament in 2006, but have not reached the semis in the last two editions.
  • Poland have won four of their five matches, losing only to Argentina.

The bet of our experts

Spain are yet to lose this tournament and that included a commendable win over one of the favourites Serbia.  They look solid defensively and the presence of Marc Gasol is a huge boost, together with Ricky Rubio and the Hernangomez brothers. As for Poland, they looked good against lower ranked sides, but struggled against Argentina. Against Spain, it will be an even difficult job, with the likes of Lukasz Koszarek set to struggle to keep the Spaniards from penetrating to the paint.
