Only three points and one place separate Southampton and Everton in the Premier League, with both sides desperate to get into safety. Southampton start the 12th round of fixtures in 18th place with eight points, while Everton are just above them with 11 points.
The hosts can go level with their visitors with a win, but their recent form is not promising. Southampton have lost five of their last six Premier League matches and are the league’s worst defensive side. However, nine of the 27 goals that they conceded have in one match. Furthermore, Southampton have shown real guts in their previous game against Man City. The ‘Saints’ led 1-0 for a long time before failing for two second-half goals. However, Southampton have struggled at home this season losing four of their five Premier League matches and winning just one point. Encouragingly though, 11 of Southampton’s 12 Premier League wins over Everton have come at the St. Mary’s Stadium.
Everton have been poor scorers themselves, with just 11 goals on their list. That is the joint-fifth worst in the Premier League so far. Everton did arrest their slide with four points in their last three matches, but the threat of relegation zone still looms large. A bigger worry for the ‘Toffees’ is their away form in the Premier League. This season, Everton have picked up just one point out of their five Premier League away matches. They remain rooted to the bottom of the standings in the away table. Everton have lost their last four away matches in the league and are winless in eight such fixtures.
Southampton showed good spirit to bounce back after a humiliating defeat to Leicester to stretch Man City last weekend. That said, the hosts still need points to stave off the threat of relegation zone. Everton are hovering perilously close to the zone and are struggling for form away from home. They have just one point in five Premier League away matches this season and there is a great chance it could stay that way.
