The match

12th placed Southampton will host table-toppers Everton at St. Mary’s on Sunday in what could turn out to be the game of the weekend. Carlo Ancelotti’s side earned a hard-fought point in a Merseyside derby filled with controversy last weekend while Ralph Hassenhuttl and his team came from 2-0 down to snatch a point in a 3-3 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The hosts earned a share of the spoils with a valiant effort last weekend torturing a shaky Blues backline. The Saints now have seven points from their first five games and got their first home win of the campaign with a 2-0 win over West Brom before the international break. Spurs came here and took all three points in a 5-2 win back in September and the home side do have a tendency to concede in home games. They kept just three clean sheets in 19 home games in the Premier League last season losing 2-1 to Everton in the process and they conceded 35 times at home. Not counting the 9-0 embarrassment Southampton suffered last October, the Saints conceded an average of 1.4 goals per home match and that has risen to 1.5 since the league restarted in June.

A 2-2 draw with Liverpool last Saturday afternoon was in fact the Toffees’ first dropped points of the campaign after four consecutive victories. That run included wins on the road at Crystal Palace and Tottenham with Carlo Ancelotti’s men winning each of their last three Premier League matches away from home. Everton went on a seven-game winning run before their draw with Liverpool and although it is early doors, they are a serious contender for at least a top-six finish after putting it up to their rivals last weekend.

Key Statistics

  • The Saints have kept just four clean sheets in 13 home games since New Year's Day.
  • Both teams have scored in each of Everton's last six games, including each of their last three league matches.
  • Each side has scored in the last seven head-to-heads between these two teams.

The bet of our experts

Two teams with consistent scorers in their sides which makes for a fascinating contest at St.Mary's here. Dominic Calvert Lewin has scored more league goals than any other player since Ancelotti took charge while Danny Ings has scored 26 times in the Prem since the start of last season. I think this will be a cracking game and I'm expecting both teams to score in this one and that is our tip for this match.
