Southampton will be looking to get back to winning ways in the English Premier League when they face a tricky home encounter against a relegation-threatened Aston Villa. Southampton start this round 12th in the standings with 31 points, while Villa are 17th with 25 points.
Three losses in all competitions on the bounce, two of those in the Premier League meant that the ‘Saints’ are without a win for nearly a month. They have now lost three of their last four Premier League fixtures, a run that is threatening to undermine the fruits of four wins in five matches prior. Although Southampton are still not guaranteed safety, they are reasonably far from the relegation zone. Continuing that theme will depend on improving their fortunes at home. Southampton have the lowest home points tally this season, although ten of those 11 have come in their last seven Premier League home matches.
Villa are flirting with the relegation zone, as they start this round one point above the 19th-placed Watford. They have been accustomed to only sporadic wins, with just three victories in their last 12 league games – losing eight of those. Having already conceded 50 goals, Villa have the worst defensive record of the season. In 16 of their 26 league games so far, Villa have conceded at least twice and are prone to heavy conceding. Furthermore, only eight of their 25 points have come on the road. In fact, Villa have won only twice away from home all season long, with just one win in their last nine league road trips.
Southampton will be keen to get back to winning ways and a win against the relegation-threatened Aston Villa will ease those concerns. The Saints haven’t been formidable at home, but Villa have been very poor on their travels. A home win looks the most probable result, although we are tipping goals at both ends.
