Time’s running out for Sevilla in their quest for European qualification as they host Real Madrid on Saturday. Tenth-placed hosts will welcome their second-placed visitors to the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán for their last home game of the league campaign. After spending early part of the campaign in the relegation zone, Sevilla are in the running for European qualification. They are only one point behind seventh-placed Osasuna with two rounds to go. In fact, four teams from seventh to tenth are separated by a lone point in the fight for the last European spot. On that note, a win here is crucial for Sevilla to retain hopes of finishing seventh via league places. There’s another route available too as Sevilla play Roma in the Europa League final next Wednesday. They would be keen not to keep their entire hopes on winning that competition though. Sevilla have won seven and drawn three of their last 11 competitive matches which gives them a stubborn outlook. The record is pretty similar at home as well with the hosts winning 11 and drawing two of their last 15 competitive matches played here.
Real Madrid may play spoilsport in that aspect though, having won seven and drawn one of their last eight La Liga head-to-heads. The visitors are just a point ahead of city rivals Atletico in their bid to finish second. The entire controversy around Vini Jr racial abuse has taken the limelight off their campaign which has been indifferent. Real have won four and drawn one of their last nine matches in all competitions, hardly praiseworthy. The league form has been stuttering too, with Los Blancos alternating wins and losses across their last seven league games after a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano. Posting consecutive wins will be a challenge, especially considering their away form. Madrid have lost their last three away league matches in a row, the last two without scoring.
