Serbia and Switzerland face off at the Stadium 974 in Doha for the final matchday in Group G at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Following their narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of the Brazilians in the last match, Switzerland find themselves in the driver's seat to finish second in the group and qualify for the round of 16 with three points from their first two matches. To do so, they’ll have to hold off the challenge of Serbia who come into this match knowing they must win if they are to keep alive their hopes of progressing to the knockout stages for the first time since 1998. The Eagles will feel they only have themselves to blame after squandering a 3-1 lead to Cameroon in the second half of their last match to ultimately draw 3-3. While they likely would’ve needed a win against Switzerland anyway, they now have to also hope that Brazil are able to take care of business against Cameroon with the two matches kicking off at the same time.
For the Swiss, their qualification path is a bit more forgiving. A draw would be enough to see them through to the round of 16, assuming that Brazil defeats Cameroon. The Nati still have open the possibility of topping the group should they defeat Serbia and Cameroon pull off a shock upset by two or more goals. A loss would see Switzerland exit the World Cup in the group stage for the first time since 2010.
These two teams met in the group stage of the 2018 World Cup and it was the Swiss who prevailed on that day, demonstrating their immense tournament experience by coming behind from a goal down early in the first half to grab a 2-1 win. Unfortunately for Serbia, experience might be the defining factor yet again. Switzerland have proven throughout the years that they simply know how to get results when they matter the most and boast a veteran squad with players who have all been in this kind of situation before. Serbia, on the other hand, showed their naivety against Cameroon by letting a two goal lead slip. While this is certainly a very talented Serbia team, it’s likely that they fall just short of reaching the knockout stages yet again.
With Switzerland’s formidable record in tournament football over the years combined with Serbia’s relative inexperience, we like the Swiss to be able to secure themselves passage through to the final 16 with a result here. Switzerland defended well and looked relatively solid against a very good Brazil team in their last match, while they likely should have scored a few more against Cameroon. With a draw likely being enough to see them through, Switzerland on the draw no bet will be our pick for this match.
