The road to Euro 2024 gets underway this week, and in the first match in Group G, we will see Serbia take on Lithuania at the Red Star Stadium on Friday evening, with the hosts looking to put their World Cup disappointment behind them. In that tournament, Serbia bowed out of the tournament in the group stages, in a group that included Brazil, Switzerland, and Cameroon. They were unable to win any of their three group matches, drawing one and losing two. Prior to the World Cup, Serbia topped their group in the UEFA Nations League with 13 points in six matches (W4, D1, D1) which made their premature World Cup exit a bitter pill to swallow. Despite their erratic form over the last year, Serbia has consistently found the net, scoring in nine of their last ten matches in all competitions. Serbia will see this as the perfect opportunity to get their tournament off to a strong start with a healthy goal difference.
Ranked 144th in the Fifa World rankings, Lithuania has not appeared in a European tournament since gaining its independence. The visitor's ranking indicates the struggles they’ve had in recent times, as they have not won a single match in their last nine attempts in all competitions dating back exactly one year to the day. Lithuania was involved in the Baltic Cup back in November but lost both of their matches to Iceland and Estonia. Their UEFA Nations League qualification campaign wasn’t much better; where they ended at the bottom of League C Group 1 and registered just one point in six matches. Lithuania will know that they are one of the ranked outsiders in this tournament, which they will hope can take the pressure off them and allow the players to go out and express themselves.
It’s difficult to make much of a case for the visitors who have gone an entire year since they last tasted victory. They come up against a Serbia side that has been prolific in the last year, despite remaining susceptible to conceding a few themselves. At home, Serbia has been very strong, and they will be eyeing up a win by a big margin in this one. Our Serbia v Lithuania prediction is on the handicap market for Serbia -2.
