Scotland will welcome Poland for their League A outing in the UEFA Nations League this Thursday. This match at Hampden Park will be the first for both nations after underwhelming Euro 2024 campaigns. Here’s our prediction.
The hosts failed to win a game at Germany 2024, only picking a point as they exited at the group stage. In their most recent match, Scotland conceded late to fall 1-0 to Hungary. That loss left them winless in four matches, losing twice in the process.
For the hosts though, it is their run of just a win in 12 matches that will be the big concern. That win was against Gibraltar. Playing in League A for the first time will in itself be a motivation for Scotland. They are also unbeaten in six matches against Poland.
While Poland haven't won any of their last six matches against Scotland, they only lost once in the process. Their latest meeting was in a 2022 friendly match, which ended 1-1. That was their third straight draw with Scotland.
Poland also had a poor showing in Germany, exiting at the group stage, having earned just one point. That point is worth inspiring them coming into this game as they rallied to draw with a strong France side. The Eagles will have star man Robert Lewandowski back fit and firing after struggling at the Euros.
The Barcelona forward has two goals against Scotland and this season he has four goals in as many games. In the 2022/23 Nations League season, Poland finished third in their group.
Scotland have done well against their higher ranked visitors and should be able to call on the same at home. After their dismal performance at the European Championship, Steve Clarke’s charges will hope to start well in League A.
Poland do not have a strong run in this fixture but will hope to go one better after three straight draws with their hosts. Both teams are looking to reverse their recent shortcomings but all signs point to shared spoils. Our prediction for Scotland v Poland is for a draw.
