A thrilling 2-1 win over title rivals Internacional on Sunday moved the current champions Flamengo to the top of the table. Flamengo took to the field one point behind Internacional before Sunday’s encounter and now find themselves in control heading into the final game of the season. Flamengo have a two-point advantage heading into the final round but face stiff opposition in Sao Paulo who are fourth so success isn’t guaranteed. Sao Paulo beat Flamengo in the cup earlier this season and they thumped the league-leaders 4-1 when these teams met in the reverse league fixture back in November.
Flamengo have won five of their last six games coming into this game while Sao Paulo have managed just one win across their last 10 matches. Only five teams have taken fewer points in that time than Sao Paulo yet they remain fourth in the table and could bag themselves a place in the Copa Libertadores if they are to avoid defeat in this game. They will be encouraged by their home record as they have only lost two of their 18 matches when hosting this season but they are without a win in six at the Estadio do Morumbi and have drawn each of their last three games at the venue.
Flamengo meanwhile, have won two of their last three away games and have accumulated more points on the road than any other side in the league on their travels. Away from home, the club has picked up 34 points having won 10 of their 18 matches and won three of their last five, scoring three goals or more in each of those fixtures.
