With only two matches remaining in the French Ligue 1 season, second-place Olympique Marseille will look to secure their runners-up position when they travel to Roazhon Park to take on fourth-place Stade Rennes. Marseille were able to respond positively after disappointingly being bounced from the Europa Conference League semifinals by defeating Lorient convincingly by a score of 3-0 away from home. The result sees Jorge Sampaoli’s team hold a three point lead over third-place Monaco as both teams battle for automatic entry into next season's Champions League group phase. Their opponents today could technically catch up to Marseille and finish second as Rennes trail by six points and possess a much superior goal differential, although that would require a number of other results to go their way as well. 

Marseille have been impressive this season and fans will undoubtedly be viewing the season as a success. They will be presented with one of their biggest tests of the season however, as Rennes have the second best home record in the division with 13 wins, one draw and four defeats. One factor to draw your attention to has been the outstanding defensive performances put forth by both clubs this season, especially when playing in their respective home and away matches. Marseille have only conceded 14 away goals while Rennes have only allowed 13 at home.

We have two of French football’s best defenses going at it here, Marseille’s which has excelled on the road and Rennes’ which has been superb at home.
