The match

The European Super Cup now awaits us, in a monumental battle that will determine the Champion of Champions. In this year’s edition, UCL holders Real Madrid meet UEL holders Eintracht Frankfurt in the Finnish capital of Helsinki. Los Merenjes had a remarkably quiet transfer summer for their standards. The loss of Kylian Mbappe who had been a transfer target for months but eventually chose to renew his contract at PSG did not send President Florentino Perez into a panicky transfer frenzy, with the Madrid side being restricted to targeted moves such as Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco and the former Chelsea defensive stalwart Antonio Rüdiger. While the Madrid side have not yet played a competitive game in the new season, they held a US Tour where they played some strong friendlies against Barcelona, Club America and Juventus, winning one losing one and drawing one. While match fitness could certainly prove to be an issue, Carlo Ancelotti’s side will benefit from the fact that they did not lose any core player of the squad, with only peripheral players such as Gareth Bale (was not in the team’s plan in the last months) and Isco waving goodbye to the capital. When it comes to competitive games, Real are unbeaten in their last four, keeping clean sheets in three of those including the massive Champions League final that secured them the trophy. With regards to the team’s Super Cup finals history, this will mark their eighth appearance in the coveted affair, losing their first two finals, winning the next four but losing in their most recent final against Atletico Madrid in 2018. Real Madrid will equalise Milan and Barcelona’s records as the teams with the most Super Cups ever should they win their fifth trophy in Helsinki.

Eintracht Frankfurt enter this final as surprise Europa League winners, after an amazing run which included wins over Barcelona, West Ham and Rangers. As far as preparations for a major Cup final go, Oliver Glasner’s side could certainly have fared much better. The scoreboard was displaying a 0-5 result at halftime on Friday night, where Eintracht were dismantled 1-6 by a ferocious Bayern Munich in the game that kicked off the new Bundesliga season. While the appearance in itself was quite poor, there were no signs of a slowdown after the German team had an excellent preseason. Specifically, they won three of their four preseason friendlies, and then easily dispatched Magdeburg for the DFB Pokal in a resounding 4-0 away win. Their defence was also in a good groove, keeping clean sheets in four of the five before the Bayern Munich debacle, while the likes of Hauge, Alario and Gotze have helped them become more unpredictable in attack, which can be shown by the ten goals scored in Eintracht’s last three games. With regards to the team’s Super Cup history, this is Frankfurt’s first appearance in the final and they become the fifth German club to do so.

Key Statistics

  • Five of Real Madrid’s last six European games have seen both teams score
  • Eintracht Frankfurt have scored thirteen goals in their last four games
  • Four of Eintracht Frankfurt’s last five competitive games have seen both teams score
  • Real Madrid have scored in twelve of their last fourteen competitive games
  • Their only previous ever meeting ended 7-3 and is regarded as one of the most entertaining European Cup finals of all time

The bet of our experts

In what should be a cracking Super Cup final, the odds don’t do justice to Eintracht. Real Madrid might boast the largest European history in the continent, yet have no match fitness and they will have to deal with a resilient Eintracht side who might have been thrashed in their most recent game, yet tend to display a strong character on European nights. While Real Madrid could very much win this, the value is in the goals market, and backing Both Teams To Score is the way to go in this fixture.
