The match

The second matchday of the Scottish Premier League sees Rangers hosting newly promoted Kilmarnock at the Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow. Rangers opened up the new league season with a come from behind 2-1 away win against Livingston in the season opener but fell to a disappointing 2-0 away defeat to Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in Europa League qualifiers the last time out. They’ll look to get back to winning ways here as they try to wrestle the league title back from rivals Celtic. Their opponents return to the Scottish top flight after just one season in the Championship. Kilmarnock topped the second division with a record of  20-7-9 and kicked the new season off with a point in a 1-1 home draw against Dundee. Killie face a much tougher task this time out against a Rangers side that has beaten them in four of their last five meetings.

Coming off a 2-0 defeat in the last fixture, manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst will surely be demanding his team come out of the gates quickly here. We should see a fired up Rangers side and there’s a good chance they are able to do some damage early against this Kilmarnock side in front of the home fans. Looking back at the previous season’s results, Rangers had a record of 11 wins, five draws and three defeats at home after the first 45 minutes. For the visitors, despite topping the Championship table, Kilmarnock still struggled away from home considering the weaker opposition. Killie had a record of 4-13-1 after the first half when playing away from home in the previous campaign and will need to improve against the oddsmakers' second-favorites for the league title in Rangers.

Key Statistics

  • Rangers have won the past three meetings between these two sides, keeping a clean sheet in each match.
  • Rangers have seen over 2.5 goals scored in four of their last five matches while Kilmarnock have seen both teams scoring in four of their last five.
  • Rangers have struck first in five of their last seven matches.

The bet of our experts

We’re going to back Rangers to be leading at halftime and fulltime as our bet for this match. Expect a strong response from the hosts after being held scoreless in their last outing. This is also the season opener at the Ibrox so you can expect an electric atmosphere and the fans to be out in full force. With the energy from the supporters, we expect Rangers to net at least one in the first half of this match and likely going on to net one or two more in the second half.
