If the reverse fixture between these two is anything to go by we are in for a thriller here. These teams played out an action packed 3-3 draw in Lisbon three weeks ago and will now meet in Glasgow to do it all over again. Rangers fell behind in a game filled with own goals, goals and red cards went three one in front and then had to settle for a point after a late comeback from the Portuguese side. As a result, these sides are locked on seven points in the top two of the group with Rangers leading on goal difference.
Steven Gerrard and his Rangers team opened up an 11-point lead on arch rivals Celtic in the Scottish Premiership as they continued their unbeaten start to this season in all competitions. The three goals Rangers conceded against Benfica are the only three they have let in since a Europa League qualifier with Galatasaray on the 1st of October and it is the same amount they have conceded domestically all season. Rangers have a staggering +38 goal difference after 15 games in Scotland and this season they have brought their form onto the continent so you would fancy them to get something from this game.
Benfica meanwhile, were in Portuguese Cup action at the weekend and had no trouble in progressing with a 1-0 win over second division side, Paredes. However, they have lost each of their last two league games either side of their last meeting with Rangers leaving them third in the Primeira Liga. Benfica’s win at the weekend ended a three-game winless run and was a victory on the road but they have lost four of their last five games when travelling abroad in Europe.
