One of the most intense football rivalries in world club football – and not just Portugal – the O Classico between FC Porto and Benfica will be played at the Estadio do Dragao in the Portuguese Primeira Liga. Both sides are tied on 31 points each and are just four points behind Sporting CP. A loss here will pull that team down in the title race which puts extra emphasis on the three points at stake.
Porto picked up a 4-1 win over Famalicao in their last league game making it seven straight wins in the division. Five of those wins have come while scoring at least three goals which underlines the scoring strength of the hosts. Indeed, they have scored 35 goals in the league so far which is at least five goals more than every other team this season. Home form has been Porto’s strong forte this season with six wins out of seven games. That included five wins in a row, scoring 13 goals in the process.
Benfica defeated Tondela 2-0 in their previous league game which extended their unbeaten record to six Primeira Liga matches. This included five wins and a draw with each win seeing them score exactly two goals. Benfica have scored 28 goals so far in the season which is the third-best tally in the division. At the other end of action, Benfica have conceded only 13 goals which is the joint-fifth defensive returns in the league this season. Travels remain Benfica’s concern, though, with the visitors dropping points in two of their last four Primeira Liga away matches, winning two, drawing and losing one each. Both the wins saw them score exactly two goals and backing them to repeat the same will be a high-risk pick worth giving a try.
