With everything on the line, the Stadium 974 plays host to a thrilling showdown between Lewandowski’s Poland and Messi’s Argentina, with qualification and first place on the line. As the group currently stands, Poland will be through with a win or a draw, but would be knocked out by a defeat coupled with a Saudi Arabia victory over Mexico. If Poland lose and Saudi Arabia draw, the two teams will have to be separated by goal difference with the Poles having a three goal advantage at present. If Poland lose and Mexico win, their fate will also be decided on goal difference with Poland currently four goals ahead. For Argentina, they must win to be sure of progressing, while a draw would be enough if Mexico and Saudi Arabia also draw. However, a draw coupled with a Saudi Arabia victory would see them knocked out, and a draw coupled with a Mexico win takes the group to goal difference. Argentina are out if they lose. An intriguing time lies ahead therefore.
The Polish side claimed a much-needed win against Saudi Arabia. While they did not leave the best of impressions against Saudi Arabia, playing second fiddle to Herve Renard’s side for a significant part of the game, they were clinical when it mattered, courtesy of goals from Zelinski and Lewandowski. Poland has now extended its unbeaten streak to four games on the spin, while they have not conceded during that run. They have also beaten Argentina in two of their previous three international meetings.
What a valuable win that was for Lionel Scaloni’s side. Argentina struggled to break down Mexico for the majority of the first hour, yet were rescued once again by Messi, with Enzo Fernandes adding another goal at the latter stages of the game. Argentina have avoided defeat in thirty seven of their last thirty-eight games, keeping clean sheets in six of their last seven. They have also been impressive in their recent encounters against European teams, scoring ten goals and conceding just two in their last three meetings with European opposition (Estonia, Italy and Germany).
In a huge game for qualification into the Round of 16, expect a battle to the end between these two adversaries. Despite Argentina being offered at quite short odds their win against Mexico was a statement of intent, while Poland laboured against Saudi Arabia and claimed the victory much harder than the final scoreline suggests. Back Argentina to win this and progress to the next round.
