It’s the battle for Europa League football in Group B when Red Star Belgrade travel to Greece to face Olympiacos. The hosts are currently on one point after four straight defeats that followed a 2-2 draw with Spurs on the opening matchday. The Greeks raced into a 2-0 lead in the reverse fixture in London a fortnight ago but were pegged back and ultimately lost 4-2.
As for Red Star they’ve suffered three heavy defeats in succession being beaten 6-0 by Bayern last time out which followed a 4-0 and 5-0 defeat to Tottenham. However, their win over Olympiacos in Serbia is what currently has the ahead of their opponents in third place on three points so a draw would do to guarantee European football after Christmas.
Olympiacos were 3-0 winners away at Panteolikos last weekend 3-0 but that was just their second win in seven in all competitions. The visitors meanwhile, were also victorious at the weekend making it three successive wins in the Serbian top-flight. Away from home they are unbeaten in five games, winning four and only Tottenham have beaten the Serbs since September when hosting.
All five of Red Star’s games have seen over 2.5 goals although they have conceded 19 goals altogether and at least conceded three times in each game. All three of their goals came in the 3-1 win over Olympiacos in Belgrade. Olympiacos do tend to start well and despite four straight defeats they’ve been losing at half-time in just one Champions League game. Red Star are winless in 10 consecutive European away matches, drawing four and losing six times.
Despite indifferent form I think Olympiacos should emerge victorious from this game and I’m going to tip a home win here.
