Newcastle United will be gunning for a second successive home win in the Premier League when they host a Manchester United team struggling to recreate the form of last season that saw them finish third. Newcastle are 9th in the standings with seven points from four games, winning two while drawing and losing one each. United are 16th in the standings with three points from three games, losing two and winning just once.
Newcastle started the season with a 2-0 win away at West Ham, but followed that with a 3-0 loss against Brighton and Hove Albion and a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur (after taking the lead) However, the 3-1 home win over Burnley put the Magpies in a better position than their visitors. The goalscoring form of Callum Wilson is a huge positive for Newcastle with the forward already scoring four times so far. Another goal would make him only the second player to score five goals in his first five Premier League games for Newcastle after Loic Remy in 2013. The have also reached the quarter finals of the EFL Cup so it's been a good start to the season.
United were thrashed 6-1 in their recent match at home to Tottenham Hotspur. That puts their season into perspective. After scrambling to a top-four finish last season, United started this campaign with a 3-1 loss against Crystal Palace although a hard-fought 3-2 win over Brighton and Hove Albion gave them their first points of the season. United have an excellent away record, though, winning their last five Premier League away matches each time scoring at least twice and with four clean sheets..
This is the first time that Newcastle United are facing Manchester United in a Premier League match starting above them in the table since December 2013. Newcastle have won this corresponding fixture 1-0 last season, but have not won back-to-back home league games since December 1987. However, the Magpies hope to take advantage of Manchester United’s fragile defence. The ‘Red Devils’ have already conceded 11 Premier League goals which is the joint second-worst in the division this season behind West Bromwich Albion. This is the second-most that United have ever conceded three games into a league season after the 13 goals they conceded in the 1930-31 season. With David de Gea not in the best of form, United look vulnerable at the back. Together with the fact that Anthony Martial is suspended and that Bruno Fernandes could be out of this game, United look short in depth. Newcastle should fancy their chances of a win. We are backing Newcastle in the double chance market.
