Matchday 24 in the English Premier League sees struggling Liverpool heading up north to take on top-four hopefuls Newcastle at St. James’ Park. Liverpool were finally able to get a win on the board in the Premier League after shockingly going four matches without a win and picking up only one point during that time. The Reds ran out 2-0 victors against local rivals Everton at Anfield in the last outing and will be hoping that the positive momentum can carry over into this matchup against high-flying Newcastle. Liverpool are languishing in mid-table in what is a disastrous league season after falling just one point short in the 2021/22 Premier League campaign to Manchester City for the league title. Liverpool are currently in ninth-place with a total of 32 points and trail the top four by a total of nine points but have a game in hand advantage.
Newcastle are well ahead of schedule after recently becoming the richest club in the world following their purchase by the PIF. While fans may have been aiming for a Europa or Conference League berth as the target for the season, they’ll now be readjusting their sights towards the Champions League as the Magpies look to have a real shot at qualifying for UEFA’s premier competition. Newcastle sit fourth in the standings with 10 wins, 11 draws and only one defeat in their 22 league matches for a total of 41 points. They hold a two point lead over fifth-place Spurs which could turn into a five point buffer given that they have a game in hand. Newcastle have not lost in the Premier League since August of 2022 but will be desperate to get back to winning ways after a stretch of three straight draws and five draws from their last six league matches. Their last result was a 1-1 away point against 19th-place Bournemouth.
