Already a third through the MLS regular season, the New York Red Bulls will look to get their first home win of the league season on the board when they host DC United at Red Bull Arena. It’s been a bizarre season so far for New York, who’s excellent 5-1-1 away record has been negated somewhat by their 0-4-2 home record. The result leaves the 2018 Supporters Shield winners still sitting a respectable fifth-place in the Eastern Conference, with the gap between themselves and the first-place Philadelphia Union now at four points. DC United head north seeking to improve upon their 1-1-2 away record and end a three match winless run, with their most recent result a 2-2 home draw against Toronto. The hosts are coming off a 3-1 home win over Charlotte in the US Open Cup in midweek but have now gone four consecutive matches without three points in the league.
These two teams faced off not long ago in the third round of the Open Cup on May 10th, with NYRB running out as 3-0 away winners on that occasion. New York will surely feel relieved to finally get their first home win of the season after the cup victory on Wednesday and will hope that momentum can carry over into this one. However, their home performances as a whole have not been impressive with the lack of consistent goal scoring the major stumbling block at the moment. The Red Bulls have managed only six goals in their six home appearances and were held scoreless in two of those. It’s not that there’s a problem with the attack in general though, as they have managed 14 goals when playing away from home which is tied for the most in the league. Their opponents have had struggles of their own finding the net although DC United’s materialize more when playing away from home. The Black-and-Red are averaging only one goal a match when on the road so far this season, although they have only played four away matches compared to eight at home.
We’re going to back under 2.5 goals as our pick for this match. Both teams are averaging only one goal a match in their respective home and away results so far this season and each have shown themselves vulnerable of being neutralized completely. The short rest won’t do the hosts any favors although finding the back of the net on three occasions will be a welcomed sight. Ultimately we think the Red Bulls will be able to snap their four match league winless run and get back to winning ways here with a 2-0 scoreline the most likely outcome.
