Spain U23 and Morocco U23 claimed big wins to set up a Monday semi-final meeting at the Olympic Games. Read on for our prediction of the match as Morocco look to upset the odds and reach their first ever final.
As it is, Morocco have already set a new Olympics record by reaching the semis for the first time. They mercilessly crushed the USA 4-0 in the quarter-finals to set up this encounter. Morocco have registered three wins at Paris 2024, and one quality they carry to the semis is their attacking strength.
They’ve scored 10 goals so far and in the last two matches registered improvement in defence, with back-to-back clean sheets. All their four matches so far have had over 2.5 goals. The African champions will be targeting their first win in three meetings with Spain.
In the earlier two meetings with Morocco at the Olympics, Spain posted straight clean sheets and a win. This time they’ll face a strong, attacking Moroccan side and they know this is a massive hurdle to their chase for a second Olympic gold.
Spain also powered their way to the semis with a comfortable win, beating Japan U23 3-0. It was the needed recovery after closing their group games with a 2-1 loss to Egypt. The losing finalists at Tokyo 2020 have three wins at Paris and scored nine times in the four matches.
While they netted in all their matches, Spain have just one clean sheet so far. Spain have met African opponents seven times at the Olympics. The only time they lost was to Cameroon on post-match penalties at Sydney 2000.
Spain are having a great year in football, from club level to the national teams, both women and men. This U23 side will be keen to keep it going by getting to the Olympics final. However, facing African champions presents a big challenge.
Morocco have proven tough in their own respect and can’t be underrated. Both teams are in great form and have been scoring a lot of goals, a trend we could see here as well. Our prediction for Spain U23 v Morocco U23 is for the game to have over 2.5 goals.
