A place in next season’s Portuguese Primeira Liga is on the line when Moreirense host GD Chaves for the promotion playoff second leg. Chaves took advantage of their home field advantage in the first leg and have put themselves in the driver's seat as they take a 2-0 aggregate lead to the ECJ de Almeida Freitas stadium. The visitors are seeking a return to Portugal’s top division after spending three seasons in the second flight and earned the opportunity after an 18-10-6 record saw them finish third in the league. Their opponents will be looking to make it eight straight season’s in the Portuguese Primeira Liga with Moreirense’s last relegation coming in the 2012/13 season. The Green and Whites finished the league campaign in 16th place and a 7-8-19 record, with a win in the final matchday of the season just edging them ahead of 17th place Tondela and giving them the opportunity to save themselves from relegation.
Chaves ontinued what they had done all season in the first leg and were able to put in another impressive home shift, increasing their impressive home record to 13-4-1 in the league. It was a brilliant win, but one that shouldn’t have come as too much of a surprise, given that Chaves held the second best home record in the second division throughout the league season. They will face a much greater challenge in the second leg, however, as a desperate Moreirense will be fighting for their lives at a venue where they have performed notably better. Five of the hosts seven wins in the league season came at home but it’s their drastically improved goals for and against numbers that catch the eye. Moreirense put together a very respectable -1 goal differential on 22 goals for and 23 goals against when playing at home compared to an ugly -17 goal differential with only 11 goals scored when playing away from home. Chaves’ significant drop in goals scored and increase in goals conceded when playing away means this tie is far from done and dusted.
