Real Madrid will hope to get their UEFA Champions League campaign back on track when they travel to Borussia-Park in Mönchengladbach for a Group B match against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The hosts have one point and are second in the group behind Shakhtar Donetsk. Madrid travel here after a loss to Shakhtar in their first match and are still looking for their first points.
Mönchengladbach drew 2-2 with Inter in the first round to kick-start their Champions League campaign. The German club defeated Mainz 3-2 over the weekend in Bundesliga to extend their unbeaten run to five competitive matches – winning two and drawing three. However, Mönchengladbach remain winless in the Champions League – drawing three and losing to Barcelona – although their last appearance in this tournament was back in 2015-16. Interestingly, Mönchengladbach haven’t had a successful record at home in the Champions League winning just two of their eight home matches in this competition, losing and drawing three each.
Madrid were surprisingly beaten 3-2 by Shakhtar at home in their first match of the Champions League season, but bounced back with a 3-1 win over arch rivals Barcelona in La Liga. Zinedine Zidane’s men, however, still look a bit vulnerable and prone to conceding. They have now gone three matches without a clean sheet in all competitive matches this season. In the Champions League, Madrid have seen both teams score in their last five matches and that could be in play here. Los Blancos have lost their last three Champions League matches in a row, but have won nine of their last 12 away matches in the competition.
Borussia Mönchengladbach would be looking to take advantage of Real Madrid’s inconsistent start as they target the first win of their Champions League season. Madrid will be confident after a 3-1 over Barcelona and should win this contest. Our pic is in the goals market with both sides primed to find the back of the net.
