The third matchday of the German Bundesliga sees Borussia Monchengladbach host Hertha Berlin at Borussia-Park. Monchengladbach got off to a good start in the 2022/23 Bundesliga campaign, taking four points from their first two matches with a 9-1 DfB Pokal cup win thrown in as well. Fans of the Foals will be hoping their team can return to contending for the top four league positions after two consecutive seasons of mid table finishes. The visiting Hertha narrowly escaped relegation after a disastrous 2021/22 season saw them save themselves from the drop by defeating Hamburg in the relegation playoff. The Old Lady wasn’t able to get off to a winning start in the new campaign, suffering an opening day loss away from home to city rivals Union before taking a point at home against Frankfurt.
Hertha’s current run of form is a definite cause for concern for manager Sandro Schwarz and the fans. The side has now failed to record a win in their last eight matches after ending the preseason on a four match losing run. They appear to have carried over the defensive fragility which saw them concede 71 goals in the previous campaign, second highest in the Bundesliga, into this season and have allowed 18 goals during their current winless run while failing to keep a single clean sheet. This matchup looks to be a recipe for goals, especially with Daniel Farke returning to German football as manager of Monchengladbach. Farke, not known for a defensive style of football, has his team looking good going forward in the early days of the new season. The former Norwich boss will be confident of getting the three points here against a vulnerable Hertha side in what looks likely to be a high-scoring, entertaining affair.
