Monaco finished third in Ligue 1 last season, only five points behind champions Lille. They begin the 2021/22 season with a home game against Nantes who narrowly avoided relegation last season. A form guide for the last 20 games actually had Monaco a point clear at the top. Only two of their last 23 league games were lost last season. A run of three straight losses in December 2020 hit their title hopes. They got off to a good start to this season with a 2-0 win at Sparta Prague on Tuesday in the Champions League. Monaco had the best home record in Ligue 1 last season with 12 wins and only two defeats.
Nantes looked on their way to Ligue 2 last season. They finished in the relegation play-off position but won four of their last five matches to escape the bottom two and automatic relegation. Then they defeated Toulouse in the play-off to keep their position in Ligue 1 despite losing the home second leg. They won the away first leg 2-1 and stayed up on away goals. Last season saw them lose 2-1 at Monaco and they have lost their last seven league visits with no win since 2009. Their pre-season hasn't gone well with four of the last five lost. Back Monaco to start the new league campaign with a home victory.
