The bronze match in men’s football at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will have 2012 winners Mexico take on hosts Japan after the two nations lost their semi final clashes. Mexico fell 4-1 to Brazil on post match penalties while Japan were 1-0 losers to Spain in a match that went all the way to extra time. Mexico go into this game as the top scoring side at the tournament, having netted 14 goals so far. In three of their five matches, they’ve scored two goals or more. They don’t have a defence line to match though, having let in six goals in the five matches, keeping only two clean sheets.
This is the second meeting between these two nations at this event. At the group stages, Japan beat Mexico 2-1 and going here they will be seeking a repeat. They’ve lost their attacking flair though, after a fine run at the group stages and head here without a goal in the last two games. Japan have scored half the tally of Mexico’s goals – seven but they have been better defensively, conceding just twice so far. They have one clean sheet more than Mexico and heading here they’ll have to craft a good strategy to stop the lethal Mexicans.
Mexico’s best quality at this event is their attack. They’ve managed to score 14 times but they haven’t gotten it right in defence in most of their games. That could be the difference in this game with Japan not as good in attack, but have had a decent showing in defence. Playing at home, Japan will want to give all for a win, but that may just expose them to the lethal Mexican attack. Mexico’s attack has the quality to win them this game but they may not keep a clean sheet. Go for both sides to score and Mexico to win.
