Manchester City will hope to keep their Premier League troubles at home when they travel to Marseille for this UEFA Champions League Group ‘C’ Matchday two. City have won their first match of the tournament 2-0 against Porto, while Marseille were defeated 1-0 by Olympiacos in their season opener.
Marseille bounced back from the 1-0 loss to Olympiacos on Matchday one of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Lorient over the weekend. Incidentally, the loss to Olympiacos remains Marseille’s only loss in their last six competitive matches – although drawing three and winning only two of those. The French side is still searching for its first win in the Champions League since February 2012. They have lost their last ten Champions League matches in a row including each of the six group matches in 2013-14 when they last played in the competition. Even at home, Marseille have lost six of their last seven Champions League matches winning just once.
City’s frustrating start to their Premier League campaign continued over the weekend in a 1-1 draw against West Ham United. Pep Guardiola’s side have now failed to win three of their last six in all competitions, drawing two and losing once. The 3-1 win on Matchday one against Porto was their eighth win in the last 11 Champions League matches, drawing two and losing only once. Although not emphatic, City’s away form in the Champions League is solid and not spectacular. They are unbeaten in four matches winning three and drawing one, while losing just once in their last nine Champions League away matches winning six and drawing two.
Manchester City will have to overcome their frustrations from the weekend when West Ham snatched a point in a 1-1 draw. The highs and lows of their form coincide with the injury concerns, although Guardiola’s team brings rich Champions League form into this match. They have lost only one of their last ten Champions League group stage matches and will fancy their chances. More so because Marseille have lost their last ten Champions League matches and their last four at home. We are backing the visitors to extend that Marseille losing run.
