Manchester United won the away leg 2-0 and are well on their way to the Europa League semi-finals. Granada may have something to say about that but they face an uphill battle to get back into contention in this tie. United followed the win in Spain with a 3-1 victory at Tottenham on Sunday, their third win in a row since being knocked out of the FA Cup by Leicester City. They are unbeaten in their last eight home matches with both of the last two ending in victory. In the Europa League this season, United have had three wins and two draws in this season's Europa League after finishing third in their Champions League group. You have to go back to 2012 for the last time they lost a home Europa League game with only two conceded in their last seven played at Old Trafford. They are nine points clear of fifth in the Premier League, so a top four finish looks highly likely. That takes off some of the pressure in this competition, rather than having to win it to qualify for the Champions League as has been the case in the past.
Granada are in that situation as it's unlikely they will qualify for European competition via their La Liga position. They are eighth in the table but eight points behind the final qualifying position. The weekend saw them win at 17th placed Real Valladolid, ending a run of four straight defeats. It was nearly five though as they trailed 1-0 with 12 minutes of normal time remaining. Granada had onl won two away league games before that victory. This is their first season in European competition and they have done well to reach the last eight. Their first four away games were all won but the last three have produced a draw and two defeats. Another looms here, go for United to get the home win and move into a semi-final against either Roma or Ajax.
