Manchester United return to competitive action after the World Cup break with a home game against Burnley in the League Cup on Wednesday. The first half of their season wasn’t entirely convincing but they come into this game with two straight wins posted before the World Cup break. They had registered a much more stable run ahead of the break, with just one loss in 12 matches. In their last four meetings with Burnley, Manchester United are unbeaten, winning three and drawing the most recent. In each of their last three meetings, both teams have scored and the same is the case for Manchester United’s last three matches. Manchester United have failed to score in just one of their last 14 matches.
Unlike Manchester United, who return to action for the first time since the World Cup break, Burnley have been in league action for two matches now, and won both. They are coming from a 3-1 win over Middlesbrough, a game in which they had to recover from conceding early in the second half. Their quality has been clear to see in the Championship and even as they put to the side their promotion ambitions, their ability should stand out here. Burnley have scored three times in each of the last four matches, winning the four games. They however need to improve defensively, having managed just three clean sheets in their last 10 matches.
Burnley have shown some great quality in the Championship this season and will not be fazed by the prospect of playing Manchester United at Old Trafford. They’ve been comfortable in attack, but a lot of work needs to be done in defence. Manchester United have also done well in attack and need to work on their defending. Both teams scoring has been a common feature in United’s game and this could still be the case with a number of their defenders away after participating in the World Cup. Back both teams to score.
