Manchester City will have to bounce back from a shocking Champions League exit at the hands of Real Madrid in midweek when they host Newcastle at the Etihad for matchday 36 of the Premier League. City looked to be through to the final for a second consecutive season after going ahead 5-3 on aggregate thanks to a Riyad Mahrez goal in the 73rd minute. What followed was one of the Champions League’s biggest ever collapses as Madrid would go on to score two goals in the 90th and 91st minute to send the match to extra time, before scoring the eventual winner in the 95th minute to advance by an aggregate score of 6-5. Manager Pep Guardiola will be faced with the tough task of lifting his team’s morale after the devastating defeat as they are still in the midst of a tight title battle with Liverpool. City are currently top of the table at the time of writing with 83 points to Liverpool’s 82, although they could come into this match trailing the Reds if Jurgen Klopp’s men come out victorious against Spurs on Saturday.
Newcastle have been terrific since the appointment of former Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe and have solidified their position in midtable after an early season relegation scare. The 44-year-old Howe has a record of 11-4-8 with the Magpies in the league as the newly minted “richest club in the world” look to set the foundation before an anticipated summer of heavy spending. Newcastle sit 10th in the table with 43 points and are coming off a 1-0 loss to Liverpool, a result which snapped an impressive six match home winning streak where they outscored their opponents 10-3. We will have to see how Manchester City responds to the midweek disaster but this team has a strong mentality. It is likely that we see a fired-up City team looking to silence some of the naysayers with a dominant performance here.
