Olympique Lyon will welcome Rennes in their next Ligue 1 encounter, a clash pitting two sides whose seasons have been hampered by inconsistency. Rennes have dropped off the Champions League slots and are now sixth with 50 points but remain six points ahead of ninth placed Lyon going into this game. Both teams will be smarting from losses in their most recent outings, and seeking to bounce back here. For Lyon, a loss and elimination from the French Cup means they aren’t in contention for any silverware now. They fell 1-0 away to Nantes in the cup game, leaving them with just a win in the last five matches. Lyon however have a better run in the league; in the last 10 matches, they have only lost once – to Auxerre. Their recent run in the league is however not strong, as they have posted three draws in the last four matches. Heading to this game they will aim to build on the 1-0 win over PSG in their last league match. Two wins only in 10 home matches in the league will however dampen their chances going into this game – they have five draws at home in the last 10 league games.
Rennes are coming from a 1-0 home loss to Lens, and just like Lyon, they failed to build on a win over league leaders PSG in the earlier game. This defeat was their second in four matches and left them on just a win in four matches and in three of the four games, they have failed to score. In only one of the five games have they managed more than a goal – the 2-0 win over PSG. All of their last five matches have ended in under 2.5 goals and they have just three wins in the last 10 matches. Somehow, Rennes have managed a good run in their away matches coming into this game; in the last three they are unbeaten and haven't conceded a goal. They have two wins in three away matches and in the last five matches they’ve failed to score in just one.
One thing that has hampered the progress of these two sides is inconsistency. While inexperience is stated as a reason for their struggles, inconsistency has stood out, right ahead of this game and we expect to see the same here. In light of their recent performances, the Lyon v Rennes game is highly likely to end in a draw.
