The match

After a 116-98 win in Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Los Angeles Lakers will look to continue their strong record against Miami Heat and extend their grip on the series. The Heat started on a positive note in the first match and took a deserving lead against the Lakers. However, the Lakers were too strong to overturn that and go on a 75-30 run to decimate the Heat and post a comfortable victory.

The Heat are running through various fitness issues which is hampering their ability to compete with Lakers on a level footing. Goran Dragic has a plantar issue in his left foot and could be ruled out of the Finals completely. Bam Adebayo has aggravated his shoulder and it remains to be seen how the Heat can improve. Thankfully for them, Kendrick Nunn managed 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting in the Finals opener. Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson couldn’t get going and got 14 and 0 points respectively. Unless the Heat improve and punch above their weight, the series could prove to be a dampener.

The Lakers started slow in Game 1 with the Heat racing to a 23-10 lead midway through the opening period. However, the Lakers started putting things into place and led in all fields. They outrebounded Miami 54-36 and at one point led by as many as 36 points. Additionally, they mad 15 three pointers and that could be a key driver once again in Game 2. Especially since the Lakers are 21-3 in this season when they made at least 14 three pointers. Anthony Davis with 34 points, LeBron James with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and nine assists helped the Lakers steamroll Miami.

Key Statistics

  • Lakers have won their last five matches against the Heat, including Game 1 of the Finals.
  • Lakers have won their last three matches in the NBA Finals going back to their 2010 Finals appearance.
  • The Heat have lost their last four NBA finals matches, including three from their last such appearance in 2014.

The bet of our experts

Miami Heat continue to have troubles holding on to point advantage. The loss in Game 1 was the 19th match in which the Heat this season have held a lead of 10 points or more – which is the most in the NBA including the regular season and playoffs. Interestingly, this is the second time it has happened against the Lakers, as Heat continue to throw away leads. Earlier in the season, the Lakers have come back from being 14 points down and will fancy their chances once again against Heat. We are backing the Lakers to do the job and go 2-0 up.
