A clash atop the MLS Western Conference sees first-place LAFC host up-and-coming Austin FC at the Banc of California Stadium in Los Angeles. After a disappointing campaign last season, LAFC are back to looking like their old selves as they try to replicate the record breaking form of the 2019 Supporters’ Shield winning team. The Black and Gold currently top the Western Conference standings through the first 11 games of the season with 23 points and a record of 7-2-2. Their opponents, Austin FC, are only in their second season of MLS football but have looked a formidable opponent to start the year. A record of 6-3-2 sees them sitting third in the West with 21 points as they face arguably their toughest task of the season so far. Los Verdes will need a strong response after a 2-1 away loss to Real Salt Lake in the last match has now made it two consecutive losses for the Texas based club. LAFC are coming off a loss of their own after falling 2-0 away to Colorado in their last fixture.
This matchup sees the two highest scoring teams in the MLS face off which is the reason why we get such a high total at 3.5. While on paper this may seem like a shootout, there are reasons to believe that this one could stay under the posted total. Austin has not yet proven to be capable of scoring with the consistency that they manage when playing at home. The second-year team has only netted eight away goals which is nearly half of their home total of 15. Their recent slump of only one goal in the last two matches could also present an obstacle, especially when playing a side of the quality that LAFC possesses. The hosts have looked solid at home on the defensive end, only allowing five goals in six matches, and have only conceded multiple goals on one occasion. This is a big match for both sides despite it still being early in the MLS season. As a result, we could see a cautious approach in the first half from each as they look to feel each other out with this being the first time they have faced off this season.
We’re going to back LAFC to win and under 3.5 goals as our pick for this one. The visitors will be aware of all the weapons that LAFC possess which should see a more conservative game plan from manager Josh Wolff. Likewise, the hosts should respect their opponents hot start to the season and will absolutely be focused on an improved defensive display after conceding four goals in the last two league matches. LAFC are likely to continue their unbeaten home form in this match as a 2-0 type of result could be on the cards here.
