West Ham United face the prospect of remaining in the English Premier League relegation zone when they come up against the top-ranked Liverpool at Anfield. Liverpool are runaway leaders in the league with 76 points, while West Ham are 18th with 24 points.
Liverpool have lost 1-0 during the midweek Champions League fixture, but have been in excellent form in the Premier League. The ‘Reds’ have won their last 17 Premier League matches in a row. Furthermore, ten of Liverpool’s last 11 league wins have come accompanied with a clean sheet. Little wonder then that Liverpool have the best defensive record in the league with just 15 goals conceded. They have managed 21 first-half clean sheets in the league so far and look set for another solid start. Liverpool’s home form is even more pristine, with the Reds winning each of their 13 league home fixtures this season. The last five of those have come with a clean sheet.
West Ham travel here after getting drubbed 2-0 at the Etihad, leaving them firmly in the relegation zone. They are just one point adrift of safety, but it is tough to see them get that point in this fixture. West Ham are without a win for six league games now, losing four and drawing two. Defensive worries remain top of David Moyes’ concerns, as the Hammers have already conceded 45 goals. This is worse than all clubs bar three ahead of this round, highlighting West Ham’s woes. It gets worse on the road with West Ham losing seven of their last nine Premier League away matches. That includes losing their last four road trips, two of those with a clean sheet.
Liverpool are showing no signs of slowing down, which is bad news for West Ham United in their relegation battle. A point would in all probability take them out of the bottom-three, but it looks highly unlikely that this point would be won in this match. Liverpool look all set to win another match with a clean sheet, extending their already-excellent record in the season.
