The much anticipated Champions League final between powerhouses Liverpool and Real Madrid is set to kickoff this weekend at the Stade de France in the Saint-Denis municipality of Paris. The high-profile clash sees the six-time UCL champions Liverpool looking to complete a cup treble while Real Madrid look to expand their already absurd total of 13 Champions League crowns. After falling just short of a potentially historic quadruple on the decisive final day of the Premier League season, Liverpool had to settle for second place in the league despite winning 3-1 against Wolves. Their rivals Manchester City were able to complete a thrilling 2-0 come from behind win to defeat Aston Villa 3-2 and seal their fourth league title in the last five seasons. Madrid, on the other hand, had their record 35th La Liga title wrapped up weeks ago. A dominant domestic display coupled with disappointing seasons from their closest rivals meant that Los Blancos coasted to the finish line and were able to divert their attention to the Champions League, which looks to have ultimately benefited them greatly. For Carlo Ancelotti’s side, a chance to write history and become only the fourth ever Madrid team to win a La Liga and Champions League double is on the line.
An argument can be made that Real Madrid have been riding their luck somewhat throughout this Champions League campaign. Los Blancos faced a tough road to the final, having to face PSG, Chelsea and Manchester City and looked to be facing elimination on more than one occasion. However, there is an incredible spirit amongst this team and they have truly been this year's “comeback kids”. The Spanish giants had trailed on aggregate at one point in all three of their knockout round second leg fixtures but managed remarkable late game rallies to eventually prevail in each match. They could finally see their luck run out against this Liverpool side though, as Jurgen Klopp possesses arguably the most complete team in world football - with the only exception perhaps being Guardiola’s Manchester City. Madrid probably should have been eliminated in the semifinals if it weren't for a historic collapse by City and a miracle two goals in the 90th+ minute. This Liverpool side will be desperate to avenge missing out on the league title and we should see the Reds able to get it done within the 90 minute regulation time. We’re going to back Liverpool to win the match in the 90 minutes and lift their sixth Champions League title. Real Madrid are simply overmatched here and while their fighting spirit has been immense in this run to the final, we doubt they will have enough to overcome this relentless Liverpool attack. Klopp’s team has played in every single potential match this season, 63 in total, and it’s a testament to the focus and depth of the squad to be positioned where they are. Look for them to close out another historic season by conquering Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
