It’s a mouth-watering clash in the Premier League this weekend at Anfield, as leaders Liverpool take on second-placed Manchester City. Liverpool have 31 points after 11 rounds and a six-point lead over their visitors. Manchester City have 25 points and can potentially start this match in third place, if Leicester or Chelsea win their respective weekend games.
It is going to be a massive chance for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to put day light at the top of Premier League standings. A win will give them a nine-point cushion over City, expected to be their main title rivals. And, what better place to do that than Anfield! Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 45 Premier League home matches, last losing in April 2017. This season, Liverpool have won all their five league home games. They have scored at least two goals in each of those five, but have conceded exactly once in every match. They remain the joint third-best scoring side of the division with 25 goals ahead of this round. Even defensively, Liverpool have the third-best record in the league conceding just nine times.
Manchester City have no option but to win this match against Liverpool. There are a lot of games yet to be played, but with Liverpool showing very little signs of dropping points this is do-or-die for the visitors. However, Pep Guardiola’s side received a major setback during the midweek Champions League clash. Ederson limped off midway and remains a major doubt, weakening City’s claims of a win. On a three-match winning run in the Premier League, City will have to be at their scoring best to have any hope. With 34 goals in the season, City are already the best attacking side of the league. Even away from home, City have scored 15 goals in five league games this season. However, they haven’t scored in four of their last five visits to Anfield.
This is just the 12th round of the season, but there is so much riding on the result of this fixture already. Liverpool can pull nine points away from Manchester City with a win, which could mean curtains to their title charge. Liverpool will be confident of keeping City at bay, considering their superior home record. City will have to do all the running, but it is advantage Liverpool.
