Bayern Munich are pulling away at the top of the Bundesliga and that lead may be extended come the end of this weekend. The two closest challengers in RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen will go head-to-head at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday evening. Both teams will be hoping to avenge disappointing defeats last weekend and for Leverkusen, they have a chance to swap places with their hosts. Leipzig are currently 2nd on 35 points, seven behind league-leaders Bayern Munich and sit three points ahead of Leverkusen who are back in 3rd.
RB Leipzig were beaten 3-2 by struggling Mainz who are second from bottom in the league and staring relegation in the face. Those kinds of results just aren’t acceptable when Munich are around and after picking up just four points from their last four games, Leipzig now find themselves seven points behind the record champions. At home Die Roten Bullen have been the best team in the league picking up 22 points from a possible 27 but this recent dip in form has seen them manage just one victory in three at the Red Bull Arena. Leipzig were on a nine-game winning run at home before a 0-0 draw with Koln on the 19th of December. Borussia Dortmund then left with all three points in a 3-1 win over a fortnight ago before Leipzig returned to winning ways by defeating Union Berlin 1-0 here last weekend.
Having gone 12 games unbeaten at the start of this Bundesliga campaign, Bayer Leverkusen appear to be struggling against fellow sides vying for European qualification. The visitors have lost four of their last six league games whilst winning just one which has seen them slip to third, 10 points behind Bayern and now just about holding on to their top-four spot. Just four points separate Leverkusen in 3rd and Union Berlin who are 8th so how they could do with a win here. The away side won six straight away games from the start of November leading up to Christmas but since the turn of the year they have lost each of their two away matches which were in fact against teams inside the top-eight.
