Leeds United held on to top spot on the Championship with a 3-1 win over Blackburn Rovers over the weekend to take their tally to 78 points for the season, one ahead of West Brom in 2nd and six points clear of the play-off places. As for Stoke they moved out of the relegation zone to 18th in convincing fashion with a 4-0 win over fellow strugglers Barnsley to take their tally to 46 points, two clear of the bottom three.
Leeds could be set to end their 16-year absence from the top-flight of English football with Marcelo Bielsa’s side in the driving seat of the promotion race. For the ‘Whites’ this is the first of three games against sides in the bottom seven out of the five matches they have left to play and they will be looking to build on last weekend’s win to keep West Brom at arm’s reach. Leeds have lost just three of their 20 games at home so far in the league and each of their last four wins at Elland Road have been to-nil. Uncharacteristically, they have kept just one clean sheet in four games since the season resumed but that did come in a 3-0 win over Fulham in their last home fixture.
Stoke have opened up a two-point gap to the relegation zone but their chances of extending that advantage are fairly slim coming into this match. Only two sides have accrued less points than Stoke have with 16 points after 20 away matches. The Potters have lost 12 of their games on the road and managed just four wins with their last of which coming in January away at 2nd-place West Brom.
Leeds should be looking at a comfortable three points here but just in case of a lapse in their game which we have become accustomed to in recent years I think the best bet here is to back under 2.5 goals in this game.
